Museum Open on Memorial Day @ 11:30 am

flagThe museum will be open on Monday, 11:30-1:00, as part of Memorial Day activities in York Springs. “Hello Everyone! Here Come the Yanks" . Our new WW I exhibit in honor of America’s participation in WW I from April 1917 to November 1918 is now in place. Stop by the museum to view the exhibit and share your own family stories.

This year’s Memorial Day program will be held on May 29th, Memorial Day, at 10 AM at Sunnyside Cemetery. In case of heavy rain, it will be held at the Fire Hall.

Since this is the 100th anniversary of America's entrance into the first World War in 1917, we will be covering that time period for the presentation called "Over there". The presentation "Over there" will feature President Woodrow Wilson, American and French citizens, the writer of “In Flanders Fields", and an American soldier then known as a doughboy. The skit will tell the story of the Great War and America's involvement. The highlight of the service will be the honoring of America’s veterans both living and deceased.

A shuttle will transport attendees to the service location at the top of Bonners Hill overlooking the beautiful Adams County countryside. For your comfort, a lawn chair should be brought to the service. Civil War and WW II Re-enactors will be have displays and a USO tent will be set up for refreshments. The YS Lions and IOOF members will have WW I artifacts on display as well. Come early and enjoy the day. The Lutheran Church will be holding a Chicken B-B-Que following the service at Griest Park.

About Our Historical Society

Ye Olde Sulphur Spa Historical Society works to encourage the study of the historical and cultural aspects of both York Springs and Adams County, Pennsylvania and to collect and preserve existing records and artifacts.

Our Historical Society is named for the famous York Sulphur Springs, which enjoyed a good reputation among the residents of Baltimore and Philadelphia during the 1800’s for its health-restoring properties. The York Sulphur Springs was the first summer resort in Adams County, and remained popular until the advent of the railroad made the Atlantic Beach resorts more attractive destinations. Daily stages ran from both Baltimore and Philadelphia to York Springs.

YOSSHS Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. (except for July, August, December, & January) at the Society's Headquarters at 408 Main Street, York Springs. Our building is handicapped-accessible and there is ample parking behind the building. Entrance is at the rear from the upper level.

We have a diverse membership, which includes long-time residents as well as newcomers to our community who are interested in local history and its preservation.

We invite you to visit one of our meetings to learn about our society and the history of both York Springs and Adams County. We hope you will find our gatherings interesting and we welcome your membership!
